About Us:
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra,Uttara Kannada  is a district level Transfer of Technology Centre established by the Indian Council of Agriculture (ICAR) , New Delhi in the year 2004 at Sirsi, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka State.  This KVK comes under the jurisdiction of University of Agriculture Sciences, Dharwad.  The operational area of this KVK comes under Zone 9 and Zone 10 consisting of Transisional Zone, Hill Zone and Costal Zone.  The KVK is started with a mission to dessiminate the appropriate technologies to the farming community.

The KVK has popularized many modern technologies among the farming community by conducting trainings, capaigns,exhibitions,ghostis,seminars,melas etc.  The KVK today has suficient resource to impart trainings for not only to the farmers/farm women but also to the rural youth.  Rural youth are being trained to develop sustainable agriculture not only through improved agriculture technologies but also training them in marketing , entrepreneurship, value addition, organic farming etc. The KVK has developed linkages with other developmental organization for funding the projects and implement the schemes.

Facilities Available at KVK:

1. Well Equipped Training Facility:

Both on campus and off campus trainings are conducted effectively with the help of Audio,Video and Technology Demonstration materials.

2. Soil & Water Testing Laboratory:

A soil and water testing laboratory was established in the year---- to test the soil and water for agriculutre purpose. Here the soil is tested for NPK,Mg,Ca contents and Water is tested for EC and pH value at cost. Cost of each soil sample for NPK is Rs.250 and for water testing is Rs. 50.

3. Disease Forecasting facility at KVK under NHM:

A disease forecasting unit is established at KVK under the financial assistance of National Horticulture Mission. The unit ascertains the degree of incidense of disease of horticulutre crops and to take appropriate measures in controlling the maladies.

 

Mandate of KVK:

  1. Conducting "on-farm testing" for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land use systems.
  2. Organise training to update the extension personnel with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis.
  3. Organise short and long-term vocational training courses in agriculture and allied vocations for the farmers and rural youths with emphasis on "learning by doing" for higher production on farms and generating self employment.
  4. Organise frontline demonstrations on various crops to generate production data and feedback information.

In order to a chieve the above mandate, the following broad objectives would help the KVKs to develop their specific objectives

    • To promptly demonstrate the latest agricultural technologies to the farmers as well as extension workers of State Departments of Agriculture/Horticulture/Fisheries/Animal Science/Non Government Organizations with a view to reduce the time lag between the technology generation and its adoption.
    • To test and verify the technologies in the socio-economic conditions of the farmers with a view to study the production constraints and to modify the technologies to make them appropriate.
    • To impart training to the practising farmers/farm women, rural youth and field level extension functionaries by following the method of “teaching by doing” and “learning by doing”
    • To backup with training and communication support to the district level development departments , viz., Agriculture/Horticulture/Fisheries/Animal Science/Non Government Organizations in their extension programmes.
